Photographer's Note

So why do I call this photo the shipwreck from Hell?
I'll get to that in a minute, first let me explain the subject.

If you know me at all, you know by now how much i LOVE abandoned cars, trucks, homes, buildings etc...

I knew about this abandoned ship on the beach a couple years ago, and it was the sole reason why I wanted to travel to Greece - just to photograph this shipwreck!

So it's actually been a dream of mine to hunt it down and have it in my personal gallery.

Its located in the small town of Gythio, about a 4 hour bus ride south of Athens. Take a look at the map feature and have a look for yourself.

Stranded on this beach since Dec 21 1980, it's history suggests it was a cargo ship that was smuggling cigarettes from Italy and Turkey. Left abandoned after being seized, nobody came to reclaim it, so it drifted off from the harbor and it rested here.

Its also reported to be haunted - and from what happened to me while on this photo shoot i believe it!

We were only about 9 or 10 days into our month long holiday, and we made it to Gythio - I was so excited to capture this shipwreck!!

As i'm standing here shooting it, standing on the beach, standing on some wet rocks, I moved to get a better compo. As I moved I slipped on the large flat rock and twisted my leg/knee in such a way that is not humanly possible.

As I tried to keep my balance from falling, as my leg is twisted in the wrong direction, i heard a loud POP in my knee.

We had to spend the next 2 days in Gythio - unexpected, not planned, just to rest my knee. We actually thought it may be best just to go home and end our holiday.

My knee was swollen, painful, i couldn't walk on it hardly at all. To make a long story short, we made it back to Athens, and we decided to keep taking meds, keep icing it, and we'll just go slowly and i'll seek medical attention when we get back home to Canada.

Well, I just learned yesterday from the doctor that I have torn knee ligaments and it will take months to heal. The good news is that its not a major tear that requires surgery, its a minor tear which time and rest is whats required.

Yes, its the shipwreck from Hell! Waited 2 years to capture this beast, and it was almost the death of me on this holiday!!

Oh well, at least I have an interesting story to share.

I put 2 WS photos in so you can see the rock I sipped on, have a look.

And if you're wondering John (tyro), yes, this photo is in HDR
