Photographer's Note

Walking around Acropolis you can hear the music from this street musician playing his "laterna". Laterna is a mechanical instrument "programed" in a unique way to play various songs. The musician choose the song with a buton and by turning the handle of the instrument the tune is performed. Laterna was very common in early 20th century years in Athens but slowly they dissapeard from the streets. Since those years the instrument was highly decorated with folk art motives and objects as photos from old films and long gone actors, as it is clearly seen in the shot.
Today I think that only this one is existing. The "musician" is gypsy and he is on the streets with the help of his two young sons, as seems to be a "family business". Old traditions are fading in time it's nice to see some of them resisting and bringing to us memories of the past.
