Mending ...., a photo from Magnisia, Thessaly

Photographer's Note

If you visit the port early in the morning you are sure to get some really fresh fish from the small boats bringing in their fresh catch. Later, when they have sold out, they move to a quieter place to take care of their gear for the following day work, as they start out early in the morning. Here's one of them mending his nets. I was looking at him for a while watching how fast and how meticuslously would fix the wholes in them, using only this thumb and fore finger as if he was playing a musical instrument. I just liked it and thought of sharing it with you.

Not very sharp but he was doing too fast to get a better one!

Beautiful level of detail. The DOF really makes the hand stand out although I would have preferred it if it had been a bit more off center but that's just a small complaint. Very fine shot nonetheless.

except that your photo is very ... beautiful (sometimes I want to have more words to say what I feel) : the thin yellow lines over the brown strig, the colored masses (red, yellow, "skin", purple-green) on the light grey.

I like the contrast of this old man's hand which works (with a little bit dirty worker 's nails) and this airial gesture, as that of a fairy who is going to create a miracle by throwing a curse during the birth of a princess.

Something that may have escaped our attention although we often visit places like these, and you have the sharp eye to capture a moment of the man's work. Very good detail and composition although the blur is noticed.

captured skill.
Dirty, wrinkled hands speak of many stories of the rough sea and hard daily work to provide for living.
But nontheless as dirty and wrinkled they are, they also speak of a man of great skill, will and love for the work he does. Hands fixing this net look at this moment most elegant, surgeon precise and appreciating the moment of peace after night on the sea.

Can you feel the precise touch and how he is holding the thin rope between fingers? He is just playing with them an instrument as you wrote already. Difficult to learn, it needs many ten years to learn it.

A fine close up of the hands and the delicate work they are doing. Nice image of the yellow netting above the larger net behind it. I like the simplicity of the shot and the large space in which the subject is located. Yes, there is a little blurring of the hand, but perhaps the light was not good enough to use a faster speed.
