Photographer's Note

Areopoli, which translates as "city of Ares", in reference to the ancient Greek god of war, is one of the main towns on the Mani peninsula.

Its moment of fame came when the Greek War of Independence was started here on the 17th of March 1821 by Petros Pierrakos, the last bey of Mani.

These days Areopoli is a rather flourishing and enjoyable town. With its mountaineous backdrop it still has a kind of frontier feeling to it.

This picture captures the light falling on Areopoli's church tower. Please note those carved out stones at the bottom of frame.
