Photographer's Note

The water castle of Bourtzi - a castle and a fort built in 1473 by the Venetians on an rocky isle in the port of Nafplio for protection against pirate attacks and invasion from the sea, then it was in Turkish possession and served also as a prison. Obtained by the Greeks in the 19th century, it served as a fortress during the siege of the city. In the years 1930-1970, there was a luxury hotel. Currently, the castle is available to visitors and is considered to be one of the landmarks of Nafplio.
