Photographer's Note

We were relaxing by the pool of our villa near Agios Stefanos in north-east Corfu when I spied this beautiful ship cruising in the Ionian Sea between us and Albania. So I rushed and seized my camera and took some pictures.

You can see from where I took the photograph if you look at Map:[view] for a GoogleEarth map. Looking almost directly eastward, the Albanian town of Ksamil is only about 2 or 3 kilometres distant across the Ionian Sea.

It wasn't until I came home and looked on the internet that I realised that this ship is called "Royal Clipper". Although you can't read the writing at this resolution, the ship has "Star Clippers" along her side.

Inspired by the legendary "Preussen", which, when launched in 1902 was the largest and fastest sailing ship the World had ever seen, the "Royal Clipper" is the largest and only five-masted full-rigged sailing ship built since her predecessor was launched at the beginning of the last Century. You can read more about her here. If you wish, you can also arrange to book yourself a cruise on her!

Incidentally, it was interesting to note that the original "Preussen", built in Bremerhaven, was fatally damaged by a British cross-channel steamer in the English Channel in 1910. Nonetheless, I thought the "Royal Clipper" looked a fine ship though I doubt if we could ever afford to sail on her!

Shot in RAW at 200mm and converted and edited in PSE6.
