Photographer's Note

Ancient Lisos is best accesible from Sougia Bay.
A path leads at the begining in shadow through the gorge, later over the steepish hill with no more shadow to the west into the bay of Agios Kyriakos. This bay is the site of ancient Lisos. You can see there the temple in the sanctuary of Asklepios, which preserves beautifull mosaic pavements - only one which I saw without any protection or fence. The clear, cold and tasteful water of the sacred spring flows under the temple to a fountain. There are also remains of Roman houses and tombs.
On the shore is the chapel of Agios Kyriakos, and to the west of the temple another chapel dedicated to the Panagia, both built over the remains (and from them)of early Christian basilicas.
Lisos is one of my favorit Cretan places.
