Photographer's Note

Agios Roumeli, on the south coast of Crete, at the entrance to the Samaria Gorge.

I got some snaps of the Gorge itself, including the remarkable Iron Gates, the narrowest and tallest part of the gorge. But all these years later, it's this image of a piece of vernacular carpentry, achieved, I imagine, with much energy and enthusiasm but sadly little skill, which made me stop when I was looking through My Back Pages. No, that's probably not fair: the gate was probably made with whatever pieces of wood could be found, perhaps driftwood from the nearby seashore. I've walked Google Earth's Little Yellow Man along here, but can't find the gate: long gone I imagine.

No EXIF data.
