Also sprach Zarathustra

Every time the ferry Achileas depicted here (the only surface connection between Skyros and the rest of Greece), arrives in Linaria the passengers are greeted by the first dramatic bars of “Also sprach Zarathustra”, composed by Richard Strauss. We read about it and thought it was a myth, but arriving in the harbour after a daytrip to Kymi (Evia) we heard the characteristic pattern of tympani and trumpets roll in across the bay, and it was an impressive experience. It’s a well chosen piece of music, because it dramatically announces the island, its promises, its secrets, its pride and its remoteness.

The Achileas is operated by the Skyros Shipping Company – it’s actually a cooperation and in this way it's owned by the people of the island themselves.

Bernard Jacobson (American Symphony Orchestra) wrote the following about the piece: “ Strauss' own opening is a masterly stroke. The sunrise is depicted through a Nature motif of irreducible simplicity. Proclaimed solemnly by four trumpets against the background of a deep, slowly throbbing C in octaves on the organ and the lowest instruments of the orchestra, this motif evokes a sense of infinite space, of a nascent universe waiting to be peopled.”
Passenger listening to the piece, played over the PA system of a lounge café in Linaria (near the parasols in the BG) are here

Also sprach Zarathustra is a book written by Friedrich Nietzsche. It inspired Richard Straus to write a symphonic poem opus 30 (1896). It was also used for the opening scene of the Stanley Kubrick film “2001 - A space odyssee” and scores of commercials and even the tv series L.A. Law.
Bernard Jacobson also discusses the controversies surrounding the book and the ideas of Nietzsche here

PCS2 tech: cropped, altered the contrast, saturation, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, applied the high-pass filter to get some extra detail and grit in the textures, USM-ed , added a frame and saved for the web.
