Photographer's Note

The island of Skyros, in northern Aegean Sea, Greece, is known within the country for several things. One of them is the peculiar native horse race that can only be found on this island. The horses of this race are smaller than the usual ones, bigger than ponnies though, with strong feet and well built torso. It is believed that they were very common all across Greece during the antiquity, and that it was actually the ancient Athenians who brought this horse race to the island of Skyros. However, it has long been disappeared from the rest of the country and now they are considered as Skyros native. They are wild but familiarised with human presense, and they live freely in the southern half of the island where there are no human settlements.
