Photographer's Note

Extinct medieval town (reportedly whipped with a curse!). Paleochora is the first capital of Kythira. Its name was Agios Dimitrios. It is located in the north-east side of the island. It was built in the top of the hill of an amazing and beauty gorge. If you shut loudly your echo can be heard 5-6 times.
It was built in this place for protection, just not to be seen from the sea (pirates fear).
Unfortunatelly pirate Barbarosa found the village and completely destroyed in 1537.
It is full of fine Byzantine churches and chapels. Here is one of them.

Photo taken during the race bike to Greece in 1998.
I lost film from the trip, so this is a scan from a photo.
