Metopes on the south side depicted the Centauromachy (or Battle of the Greeks and Centaurs). Where the metopes have been removed(Elgin Marbles), you can see the exposed backer blocks between the triglyphs. Note also that the triglyph at the left corner is NOT aligned directly over the Doric column capital. This illustrates the architectural detail known as "corner contraction".
