Photographer's Note

Schloss Neuschwanstein is reached by going to Hohenschwangau and then taking the bus or horse drawn carriage. The day we went, Christmas Day, the Castle was closed therefore the only mode of transport up to the Castle was by foot.

Fortunately the mountain-top mist cleared for the morning which allowed the photo to be taken. This particular pic was from the village looking up to the Castle. Thank goodness for zoom!! There is a viewing bridge at the top but unfortunately it was closed for winter because of the danger it presented.

The Castle is Ludwig II's own creation and was built as an ideally romantic medieval castle. Commenced in 1869 and never finished. Ludwig II spent only 170 days in residence before he died in 1886.

The Castle is both spectacular and beautiful, so beautiful in fact that it inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle.

The walk up the road is steep and takes about 40 minutes for a fit person. It took us longer! The views across the valley an the way up is gorgeous as you look out over snow covered fields and villages.

To get to Hohenschwangau it is probably simplest to take the train to Fussen and catch the bus, although driving or bus are the other alternates.

Which-ever mode you take it is well worth the trip as the village itself is picture postcard gorgeous.
