Photographer's Note

Since the middle of the 13th century, the archbishops in Mainz used the shipping channel of the Bingen shallow ("Binger Loch") close to the right banks of the Rhine to raise customs. Ther was military protection on both banks of the Rhine by two castles Klopp and Ehrenfels (seen here to the right). At the beginning of the 14th century the defences were strengthened with a tower ("Mäuseturm") on the island in river.

The picture was taken on cloudy day when just for some second the sun looks through the clouds.
