Photographer's Note

One of the most important problems after the flood catastrophe is the lack of intact bridges. Inside the flood-stricken city of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, only one bridge is partly intact and restricted to emergency personnel. Inhabitants of the southern Ahr bank were forced to a long 45 mins drive to reach the northern bank with its shops - as far as they are still operational. The normal time would have been a five minutes walk. The THW have constructed a heavy weight emergency bridge which connects both banks with effect from tomorrow, thus making the local hospital accessible.
Downstream from Bad Neuenahr, only two of six bridges are still intact. I took this from my car while standing on one of them. The POV is upstream. You can see that the four-lane new highway is damaged while the old two-lane road still works. The railway has suffered much damage, and a pedestrian bridge which used to be visible in this frame has disappeared.
