Photographer's Note

This photo perhaps isn't outstanding - but I think it shows something very special ...

It is the town's landmark of Hildesheim, a city with about 100.000 inhabitants not far away from Hannover in northern Germany. The town became the seat of the Bishopric of Hildesheim already in 815.
For four centuries the clergy ruled Hildesheim, before a town hall was built and the citizens gained some influence. Henceforward always again there have been several armed feuds between the town of the citizens and the cathedral provost's town - divied by a town wall!. In 1542 the city became protestant and only the cathedral and a few more buildings remained in imperial (catholic) hands. Hildesheim anyhow remained a bishop's seat and still today it is the center of the diocese, now nearly since 1200 years.

My photo shows the courtyard of the cathedral's cloister - in the foreground St. Anna's chapel (built in 1321) and in the background the cathedral of Hildesheim, particularly its Romanesque apse. The cathedral was built in 872 and altered in the 11th and 14th century.

Climbing the walls of the apse you can see the landmark of Hildesheim, the legendary 1000-year-old rosebush.

It is said that in 815 the emperor, Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne, lost his way during a hunt when chasing a deer. He attached a crucifix to a green bush, knelt down to pray and fell asleep of exhaustion. When he woke up he was surrounded by snow but his crucifix clung to a blooming rose bush and he couldn't detach it. The emperor vowed to built a church here. Shortly after the other hunters located him ...

According to the legend, as long as the bush flourishes, Hildesheim will not decline.

In 1945 allied bombers destroyed big parts of the cathedral, yet the bush survived. Its roots remained unscathed beneath the rubble, and soon the bush was growing strong again - as you can see.

It is a rosa canina (in German: Hundsrose) and it is scientifically proven that this rose bush has an age of at least 700 years ...

In the workshop you can see the rose bush from another angle.
