Photographer's Note

I watched a group of Hessian folk dancers on a rural festival at Loshausen near Schwalmstadt. Many foreigners only think of Bavarians or perhaps the Black Forest people when German folk costumes are being mentioned. But the Hessians also have a great tradition in this topic.

It is remarkable that all dancers were in juvenile age - at least 26 years ago when I took this on film. But this little girl definitely stood out. She was too young to attend school, but wore her costume perfectly, albeit with an incredulous look which might have been due to the lacking comfort of that dress, compared with what she would wear every day.

I learned that girls and unmarried women wear a red pompom on their heads while the married women are restricted to black.

Taken on film with Canon A1, scan from paper print.
