Photographer's Note

I've got most of my slides professionally scanned and thought I'd try to upload some of them to TrekEarth. They are shot from 1967 to 1994 and are scanned at 1800 dpi and post-processed in PhotoShop CS5.

A westbound Hamburg S-Bahn train has just passed under the Rentzelstrasse Bridge below the TV-tower, as the sun sets on a beautiful October day in 1986. Its been a nice 15C (59F) well into the evening and not much wind.

We've just returned from the restaurant 130 m (427 ft) up in the air and are on our way to the hotel close to Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), as I notice that the sun is about to set. And Hamburg is usually able to provide remarkable sunsets.

In an attempt to capture this one, I needed something to balance the image. So this train arrived from behind, very conveniently running on the track furthest to the right heading for the station Sternschanze.

I had some trouble pinpointing the location of the photo. I knew it was Hamburg and that it had to be taken after our visit to the TV-tower and before coming to the hotel. So I started scanning Google Earth along the main railway lines.

What didn't fit was the large amount of tracks at the left hand side, indicating a depot or a freight yard. But the large gray house to the right came to play an important role, as I found something like it on the Google Earth map. And using Google Street View passing over the bridge and looking 90 to the right - I was able to confirm the building and therefore also the location.

Today the tracks to the left are replaced by Hamburger Messe exhibition halls.
