Photographer's Note

Würzburg in northern Bavaria was one of the highlights of our trip. There's a great riverside ambience, a great low key vibe and its main sight, the baroque Residenz (with its magnificent frescoes by Tiepolo), is truly world class.

This rather classic picture shows one of the religious statues on the Alte Mainbrücke (the bridge itself is not visible here) with the Marienberg fortress in the background.

The statue is of Saint Killian (640-689), the Irish missionary bishop and Apostle of Franconia, which is the old name for this region.

Würzburg is the most northern city on Bavaria's famed "Romantische Strasse". It is also known for its connection to the Noble Prize winning scientists Wilhelm Röntgen and Werner Heizenberg.
