Photographer's Note

Perhaps the most famous castle in Germany, if not Europe, this charming castle was built upon the orders of Ludwig II. After he was declared insane by Van Gooden, his life ended tragically when he drowned in Lake Starnberg along with the psychiatrist Von Gooden, who had diagnosed him unfit to rule, despite never actually speaking to / assessing Ludwig personally, but relying on the hearsay & gossip of servants and political opponents. There are several conspiracy theories:

And these days, there is debate about whether he really was mad? He was a dreamer, rather than a politician, and wanted no part in planning wars, which made him some enemies within Bavaria along with those who saw musician Wagner as a threat to Bavaria because of the political views he held, and the fact that Ludwig was devoted to Wagner. Ludwig is much loved in Bavaria (Bayern) today, for his outstanding legacy of impressive castles and art collections.
