Photographer's Note

This image represents one of the following:
a) Autobahn engineering test
b) Mercedes Benz archeological find
c) Julius Caesar's tomb
d) Peace symbol
e) none of the above

The correct answer is "e". In front of Munich's Residenz Museum is the Max Joseph Platz, designed in 1806 when Bavaria became a kingdom. The statue is of the first Bavarian king, Max I. Joseph. Maximillian originally wanted to have an equestrian monument. He died suddenly in 1825 and the first draft of Klenze was taken showing the king in seated and blessing position. Four lions stand on the bronze base, representing his key events: agriculture development, encouragement of art, introduction of a constitution and reconciliation between the confessions.

King Max I did not not get his horse, but today he has a Mercedes.

PS: I was very surprised to see this huge Mercedes advertisement covering the museum, since the Germans have done a great job in keeping billboard advertisements off their autobahns. In America we saturate everything with trashy billboards and trashy people littering everywhere. Germany was a welcome cleansing.
