Photographer's Note

Black Forest is full of small streams, lakes, water ponds and many small or larger wetlands, a buttercup paradise. Yellow buttercup flowers in such wet areas are the first announcers of coming spring.

They are beautiful, but may be dangerous because they are often poisonous. If eaten they have a sour taste, which makes animals less likely to eat them; this defense mechanism improves their survival rate.

There are usually five petals, especially in yellow species. Buttercups usually flower in the spring and early summer.
