Photographer's Note

Zwinger is a palace in Dresden, built in style of late Baroque. The construction of the palace was ordered by Augustus the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. He saw the palace in Versailles and he wanted something similarly spectacular for himself. His architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann designed the palace and constructed it in stages from 1710 to 1728.
In 1945 the palace was destroyed during the carpet bombing raids, the reconstruction began immediately after the war and lasted to 1963.

Today, the Zwinger is a museum complex that contains the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Dresden Porcelain Collection and the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments.

Taken from the observation tower.
