Photographer's Note

Castle Ortenburg in Bautzen was built on the highest hill on the River Spree. There were found the first traces of Slavic settlement on the area of Lusatia. the first fortified building of the castle was built already in the 10th century. The whole area of Lusatia was ruled alternately by: Slavs, Germans, Czechs, and Hungarians. In the 15th century the castle was rebuilt in the Gothic style by Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus. Therefore the tower visible in the picture is called Matthias Tower. In 1698 the castle was again rebuilt in Renaissance style. Today it is the seat of the local prosecutor's office, castle theater and Sorbian museum.
