Schwerin Palace

After Wismar, I also paid a short visit to Schwerin, located a little further to the south. Schwerin is the second-largest city (100,000 inhabitants) in the state of Mecklenburg Vorpommern and also its capital and oldest city. It got city rights in 1160. Schwerin is best-known for the romantic Schwerin Palace (or Schwerin Castle, Schwerin Schloss in German), located on an island in Lake Schwerin (Schweriner See). The first castle was completed in 973. In later centuries it was home of the Dukes and Grand dukes of Mecklenburg and it has been the seat of the state parliament since 1990.
