Photographer's Note

The medieval village of Eze is a site of surpassing beauty on France’s Cote d’Azur. Perched on cliffs at an elevation of 512 m (1680 feet), its vertical approach must have discouraged most would-be invaders.

I visited Eze on two occasions, both times on shore excursions trips from Crystal Serenity, a ship on which I was lecturing. In my first visit to the village in 2002 I took a winding 40-minute bus ride from Nice, where the 'Serenity' was anchored; on the second visit three years later, I rented a car with friends and drove there from Monte Carlo. where the 'Serenity' was docked. The proximity of these two better-known cities should give an idea of Eze’s location in the southeast corner of France.
