Photographer's Note

Small fishing port, ALGAJOLA is located at 7 Km at west of ILE-ROUSSE and 15 Km of CALVI.
ALGAJOLA was a long time a Genoese position advanced in front of Calvi.
The small port of SAN DAMIANU, sheltered a Roman port during their occupation (it is not visible bus being behind the Citadel). This port will be abandoned after the departure of the Romans (between 500 and 600 after JC) until XIIème century dates to which a tower of defence will be built. Thus the fishermen found the utility of the port as well as the tradesmen. In 1620 the port becomes the second port of the island.
The city is destroyed on July 27, 1643.
ALGAJOLA castle was built on the ruins of the tower of the LOMELLINO. It was the residence of the governor of Balagna for GENES until 1764 (the castle is a private property today).
The photo one was taken since the beach of AREGNO. In silhouette on the left, the parish church of Sainte Marie (1618), and more in the middle the Citadel.
