Photographer's Note

Bastille, Paris.

Small funfair on the Place de la Bastille. We recognize on the picture the "Colonne de Juillet" (Column of July), the Bastille Opera and the glass roof of the metro station.

The "Colonne de Juillet" commemorates the "Three Glorious". 27, 28 and 29 July 1830, Parisians rebelled and raise up barricades. King Charles X flees with the royal family. Louis-Philippe from the "House of Orleans" (the Orleans' family), became King of the French. His reign, until 1848, takes the form of a constitutional monarchy and the name of "July Monarchy".

The column consists of three elements. At its base, a necropolis welcoming some revolutionary bodies fell during the "Three Glorious". His was named after the victims of the revolutionary. At its top, a gilded bronze statue of Augustus Dumont, the Genius of Liberty.
