Photographer's Note

Arabic World Institute, Paris.

Inaugurated in 1987, the Arab World Institute of Paris aims to inform the public the contribution of the Arab world to world civilization and to promote dialogue between East and West.
It has now become an important cultural center, and regularly hosts exhibitions.

The collective of architects selected, composed of Jean Nouvel, Gilbert Lezenes, Pierre Soria and Architecture Studio, chose to revisit the traditional elements of Arabian architecture in a contemporary style.

The southern facade has 240 moucharabiehs whose mechanism is actuated electronically. The diaphragm opening is adjusted every hour depending on the outside brightness. They do not, however, deal with ventilation function as do traditional mashrabiyas.
