Photographer's Note

Saujon is a town and commune in South-West of France, located in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Poitou-Charentes. Its inhabitants are called Saujonnais / Saujonnaises .

With 6796 (2010) inhabitants, it is now the tenth largest city in the department and ranks second among the 34 municipalities of the Urban Community of Royan. It owes this position to its geographical location, which it has learned to put to great advantage, as well as diverse natural assets that have favoured the local economy.

The city was first developed in the seventeenth century as a river port on the Seudre through its port facilities in the district of Ribérou. Thanks to its privileged position in the south-west of the department, near the bathing resort of Royan, which was also expanding, it became in the second half of the nineteenth century an important railway stop, and subsequently in the next century, a key transit point in the local road network. Its role developed through strong commercial services, becoming particularly renowned for its monthly fairs .

Since the late nineteenth century, Saujon has also become a spa and a tourist resort in a popular part of the mainland section of the Côte de Beauté. Its accommodations and sport and leisure activities have developed accordingly.
