Poitevin celebrity, the donkey of Poitou, "Le baudet du Poitou", sometimes called “guenillou".

The baudet du Poitou, whose race is oldest of France, has been fixed for 1000 years, and is the fruit of a selection based on the size and the robustness. It is the donkey known as being largest and most massive, 1.50 m with the garrot for a weight reaching 450 kg for the males.
It has characteristic morphological very recognizable and LONG HAIRS, even VERY LONG HAIRS.

It was much to use to generate mules and mules by hybridization with a mare.
The coupling of the donkey and a female of its race gives a fedon, while the hybridization of a female donkey with a horse gives a bardot.

Their historical and still current localization, covers the south of Deux-Sevres and the Vendée, the west of la Vienne, and the northern of Charente and Charente-Maritime.

The race was saved of extinction from 1977 and with 44 heads.
