Venice of Périgord, Brantôme

In Brantôme, in the Périgord Vert, green Périgord, on the banks of the river DRONNE:

_ The PONT COUDÉ, the bent bridge, from Renaissance time at 16th century on the Dronne. Classified historic building in 1912.
Built during the reign of King François Ier, by Father Pierre de Mareuil, between 1538 and 1556, the bridgeis made up of 10 arches, including 3 at right angles. This bridge made it possible to the monks to reach the gardens of left bank of the Dronne. Damaged by the risings of 1735, it was restored of 1736 to 1738.

_ Can be seen in the left corner, the RENAISSANCE PAVILION, former guard, and the TOWER OF THE SAINT-ROCH GATE, the 15th century, remains of ancient fortifications that protected the abbey of Brantôme. Historical monuments since 1891.

_ The SAINT-PIERRE ABBEY 12th 13th 14th 15th 16th 17th 18th 19th 20th centuries. Historical monument in 1840.
The BENEDICTINE ABBEY founded in 769 by Charlemagne is partially cave. It was damaged by the Normans in 848 and 857, undergoes the Hundred Years War in 1382 and 1404, was sold to the French Revolution in 1790, and assigned to various civilian use until the mid-19th century. Each time rebuilt or restored. Historical monument in 1840.

_ The SAINT-PIERRE and SAINT-SICAIRE ABBEY CHURCH of 11th 12th XII centuries. Historical monument in 1840.
The romanesque church has a gothic vault. The bell tower of the abbey church of the 11th century is one of the oldest bell tower in France.

_ The DRONNE takes its spring in 480 meters in height, in Massif Central, in the locality Borderies, on the municipality of Bussière-Galant, in the department of the Haute-Vienne, and flows in the Isle to Coutras, department of the Gironde, after 200.6 km of course through a catchment basin of 2816 km². Description of the Dronne.

Brantôme is a french commune, located in the department of the Dordogne of the Aquitaine region, populated of 2140 Brantômais in 2007, distributed on 34.7 km ², that is to say 61.8 hab./km².

The city of Brantôme, built on an island of the Dronne, and called “VENICE OF PÉRIGORD”", is a gate of the Parc naturel régional Périgord-Limousin.
