Photographer's Note

The name Terrenoire means 'Black earth'.
Since 1970, Terrenoire is a city district of Saint-Etienne. In the 19th century, the city was a major centre of heavy industry, with steelworks installed and operated due to availability of carbon and iron ore.
Now the heavy industry era is over for Terrenoire and for entire St-Etienne, and the region is searching some new ways for its further development.
The photo was taken from a pedestrian path connecting St-Etienne (Rue dr Paul Michelon) and Rochtaillée, hence above the centre of Terrenoire, in the little valley of Janon. On can see how the old degraded land is gradually being covered by new vegetation.
