Photographer's Note

Avignon, Palace Square.

In July, Avignon lives to the rhythm of theater and performing arts. The Avignon Festival attracts, each year, thousands of visitors. Dozens of shows take place all over the city, in the main courtyard of the Palace of the Popes as in various venues.

In addition to the official program, many theater companies, clowns, jugglers come to Avignon to make themselves known to the public. This is the "Off" Festival. The entertainment offered is such important that all means are good to get noticed and to attract viewers. Everywhere, posters pop up on the facades of the city center, and it is not uncommon to see whole streets lined by tens of meters. These posters occupied a high place of the city, the Palace Square.

Beyond the wild display of posters that gives a bohemian air to Avignon historic district, many theatrical "happenings" allow the "Off" festival to promote their show to the public. This creative emulation plunge the city into a continuous turmoil.

The Avignon Festival has been founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar. I will keep an unfading memory of this first visit to Avignon festival. Whirlwind tour since I was there less than 24 hours (it was part of a business trip) but enough to feel intense cultural ferment.
