Photographer's Note

Today is the first mountain stage in the Tour de France. The stage will start from Tarbes and end in La Pierre Saint-Martin in the Pyrénées. So today I show you a photo of a legendary pass in Pyrénées : the Tourmalet pass. I took this one in last autumn. This is a view on Barèges side. You can see on the right third the Pic du Midi de Bigorre pyke and its observatory.

The Tourmalet pass is 2,115 metres height and is the highest pass in the French Pyrénées. The Tour de France passed by the pass for the first time in 1910. It will pass by tomorrow for the 79th time, which makes it the most entered pass in the whole history of Tour de France. The pass is so hard that Octave Lapize, the first racer to pass the Tourmalet in 1910, said to the organizers : "You are murderers !".
