The Circus of Navacelles,
general view of the circus
Causse ofcLarzac

The circus of Navacelles is a natural circus formed by a meander cut of the river the Vis. The Vis dug impressive throats between Causse of Larzac in the south (Saint-Maurice-Navacelles, Herault) and Causse of Blandas in North (Blandas, Gard.

At the bottom of the canyon, 300 meters lower than Causse of Larzac, the Vis fall in cascades in Navacelles. The hamlet of Navacelles is fixed on the rocks thus respecting a flat-bottomed loop of cultivated fields which surround a small relief of limestones. The unit is dominated by slopes covered with some sharp falls, which draw a large amphitheatre, whose bars limestones would constitute the steps. This "circus" is an old course of the Vis.

Saint-Maurice-Navacelles is a commune in departement of Hérault resulting from the fusion of the three communes from Saint-Maurice, Navacelles and Madières. On a surface of 6850 hectares, located at the average altitude of 584 meters, this commune shelters 146 inhabitants.
