Photographer's Note

Being an engineer, I just had to stop by Pont du Gard while in the south of France. This aqueduct was built 2000 years ago, and although it no longer carries water it is still there. An even more amazing fact is that it was part of a system that carried spring water for a whole city! It's very humbling to realize that engineers have been meeting the needs of civilization through sophisticated projects for thousands of years without the formal knowledge of fluid mechanics and structural analysis.

After exploring the aqueduct during the day we came back at nightfall. I took this from the right bank so the upper level appears to recede.
