The term “grau” comes from Latin gradus meaning “passage”. A grau puts in communication the littoral sea and ponds.
This grau was at the origin naturally open by a rising of the Rhone to XVIe century.

The city of the Grau-du-Roi was based by the King Henri IV to give an outlet on the sea to the old port of Aigues-Mortes. The port of the Grau-du-Roi is connected since 1724 by a canal of six kilometers to Aigues-Mortes. Under the reign of King Saint-Louis, the town of Aigues-Mortes was a royal port far away from the sea. The ships left by a canal dug through the ponds.

The Grau-du-Roi, second French fishing port of the Mediterranean, had in 2006 a production of approximately 5400 tons, mainly octopus, hake, bar and plate. He is also practised fishing with the telline and eel. The flotilla is composed of 95 units, including 32 trawlers of more than 18 meters, taking on board 210 sailors.

The port of the Grau-du-Roi is located at the south of the department of Gard, and is the only maritime outlet of this department.
Near the Grau-du-Roi are Port-Camargue built of the Sixties to 1985, one of the largest marinas of Europe, and of the considered beaches, whose famous beach of Espiguette of several kilometers length.

Near the port, is the canal of the Rhone to Sète, prolongation of the Canal du Midi which connects the pond of Thau close to Sète, in the Rhone river with Beaucaire.

Le Grau-du-Roi is a french commune, located in the department of the Gard of the Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 5785 Graulens, distributed on 58 km², that is to say 101 hab./km².

Hi Joel.
Beautiful weather for mid-November, although I see people wearing coats. Your composition is very nautical, and the seagulls add something dynamic to the picture. Maybe I would have cropped or cloned out the one at the top, which is bisected by the frame. But the detail is sharp and the light is so well exposed. A very pleasing daily life picture.

ces scènes de régions littorales apportent toujours une atmosphère tranquille. L'inclusion de bateaux chalutiers et de promenade et les mouettes renforcent cette idée. Le format a ici été un bon choix sien. Couleurs et lumière naturelles comme toujours. Excellente composition!

Bonjour,
belle photo de ce bateau au jolis nom qui nous rapproche de février.
Jolies couleurs, bonne netteté et explications très intéressantes, avec ces autres photos qui nous donne des vues plus large sur vos explications.
Les grau du Roi ne vont plus avoir de secret avec ces explications et ces nombreuses vues.

Le point de vue est pas très différent de celui de l'image "Back to the harbour, le Grau-du-Roi" mais ce cadrage est bien different, avec le bateau à l'ancre et les goeland qui evoluent autour de lui.
