Bonifacio is – to me – a strange place. I’ve been there many times but it never ceases to convey a sense of remoteness in time and from men. It’s like as if it stays apart from the rest of Corsica, an island of limestone inside a bigger granite one. You see immediately that is a locked in place, inaccessible, with its high cliffs and ramparts that are there to drive back invaders or intruders. Surely it was a den of pirates, a door open only for friends.
Of course you can get those feelings if you visit it in winter, when the place is so solitary that seems empty. Where are its inhabitants? How do they earn their bread? It must not be easy.
But Bonifacio is also a wonderful watching spot. If you go there you shouldn’t miss the path along the brink of the cliff that you can see in this photo. If you are a panoramas lover like me you’ll be rewarded.

Bonifacio è – per me – un posto strano. Ci sono stato molte volte ma non cessa mai di comunicarmi un senso di lontananza nel tempo e dagli uomini. E’ come se fosse separato dal resto della Corsica, un’isola di calcare dentro una più grande di granito. Si vede subito che è un luogo chiuso, inaccessibile, con le sue alte falesie e i suoi bastioni messi là per respingere gli invasori o gli intrusi. Sicuramente era un covo di pirati, una porta aperta solo per gli amici.
Naturalmente si possono cogliere queste sensazioni se lo si visita in inverno, quando il posto è così solitario che sembra vuoto. Dove sono i suoi abitanti? E come si guadagnano il pane? Non deve essere facile.
Ma Bonifacio è anche un luogo di osservazione formidabile. Se ci andate non perdetevi il sentiero lungo il bordo della falesia che si può vedere nella foto. Se amate come me i panorami ne sarete ricompensati.
