Photographer's Note

First of all I would recommend that when opening the country drop-down menu to find a place, Guadeloupe, Martinique or Reunion are shown as separate countries rather than being listed under France.

In my professional activities (I am working in commercial aviation), These 3 departements d'outre-mer are not considered as being part of Metropolitan France.

Furthermore, when someone here in Canada goes to Normandy, he will say "I am going to France". But if that person goes to Guadeloupe, he will never say "I am going to France".

Anyway. I am myself a native of Guadeloupe and this is where I started my photographic activities in the early 1970s.

This photo was taken in the marché de la Darse, downtown Pointe-à-Pitre. The difficulty in taking pictures of people in Guadeloupe or Martinique is that you've better ask them permission, otherwise they could easily be upset and you get into problems. You could try to make photos without them to notice it. But generally these pictures are not so great. You must hurry up to take the shot otherwise they will notice it sooner or later.

So what I am doing is, when going to the marché, I have plans to buy a few things, either a pine aple or lemon or any other cheap stuff. Very often the interlocutor accepts with no problem that you make a picture, if in exchange you buy something.

If you are lucky, he/she can accept without having to buy something. But in all cases I recommend that you ask first !!

Regarding the picture itself, it is a little bit reddish and this is due to the red color of the roof protecting people from a hard bright sun.
