Photographer's Note

Sight of the southern part of the ramparts of Coucy-le-Chateau. Photo catch from one of the towers of the door of Soissons acting as museum today.

These fortifications (1700 meters long) dominate the valley of the Ailette river over a rocky outcrop.

Construction began at the 13th century. The unit was composed of a medieval castle surrounded of its fortifications. We found the largest tower of medieval Europe (54 meters height and 31 meters in diameter).

This tower (entirely destroyed), the doors of the ramparts as well as a great part of the ramparts (partially destroyed) were damaged at the time of the folds of the German army in March 1917.
