Photographer's Note

Dunkirk Carnaval tradition is lasting since the 17th century.
In the old times, herring fishermen left Dunkirk in februar for 6 months, and they were granted with half of their salary before departure.
Their last days ashore were made of singing, drinking, marching in the streets, well... enjoying the life, just in case...
Of course, makeup and costumes are the most visible part of this culture.
Nowadays, this tradition is the pride of Dunkirk, and every week end in spring you can join the procession in the streets, provided you are well dressed and maked-up!
Of course, you will sing, you will drink, you will walk... but don't look for any privacy when you go for a pee!
