Photographer's Note

What to do on a Monday afternoon, when one half of the country is at work and the other half is not?

Whit monday used to be a legal holiday. But, last year, the previous Prime minister tried to make amends for his lack of reaction while the extreme heat, during the summer of 2004, had caused the premature death of thousands of elders, and decided that everyone should "offer" a working day on this particular day, to pay for better monitorings and equipments (some dispensations had even been scheduled, according to some local and traditional celebrations, but let's not complicate this more than it already is...).
This year, things were slightly more confused (most people had been given the possibility to work or not, but many schools were closed), not to say confusing (freight truck traffic had been forbidden!).

Anyway, what to do in Paris, on the 5th of June, as summer is finally on its way?

Appreciate again the fascinating exhibition of the lush and exotic jungles painted by Henri Rousseau though he never set foot - nor his easel - in Africa or in Asia?
Walk down the avenue des Champs-Elysées, between the Grand Palais and the Tuileries garden?
Sit in the shade on a patch of soft grass and white daisies, a few meters away, and let the good times roll?
Watch other people chit-chat, flirt and kiss passionately?
Listen to deux Japanese girls practice an arrangement of Mozart'sle Nozze di Figaro for flute and clarinet while the wind disturbs their music sheets and one of their friends is drawing?
Get ready to go to an exhilarating concert of Dweezil Zappa playing the music of his father, with a brand new band and the energizing participation of a few older veterans who used to record and tour with Frank Zappa some 20 years ago (and even much more)?

All of it?

Just a perfect day,
Problems all left alone,
Weekenders on our own.
It's such fun.
Just a perfect day,
You made me forget myself.
I thought I was someone else,
Someone good.

Oh it's such a perfect day,
I'm glad I spent it with you.
Oh such a perfect day,
You just keep me hanging on,
You just keep me hanging on.

Lou Reed - Perfect Day
