Photographer's Note

This is one of a several photos that I took at a New Orleans Relief Benefit Concert for a friend who had organised the event. The band is (if I am correct) The Eric Brown Band, who were superb. In addition there were performances from serveral bands and performers including Eloi, Fidgety Feet, Heavy Blues Band (really excellent), Rene Miller's Wedding Band, Aldridge Hansberry Ensemble and Helen Carter (also excellent). If you ever visit Paris it is worth looking up any of the above bands to see if they are performing and dropping in to listen. The event itself was a success and money will be passing to the American Red Cross in the near future.

This was my first time to shoot such an event, and for those of you who are considering taking photo's in similar circumstances (i.e. low light photography at a similar indoor event with stage lighting) the following may be useful. (i) Preset the white balance on the camera to Tungsten and if you can add some tint then move towards green and away from magenta. (ii) Stating the obvious, performers tend to be animated (or at least those making good photos tend to be) so a shutter speed as high as possible (125th and up is better), I had 1/60th and some of the pictures suffered as a result. (iii) Set the camera to ISO1600 or higher if possible, reasonable results can be achieved if you apply Noise Ninja or Neat Image to the resulting picture. Don't use a flash. (iv) You don't need low f-stop primes to take good pictures - I used a 24-70/f2.8 zoom which gave good field of view, though if I was further away the 70-200/f2.8 would have been better. I have a 50/1.4 but didn't find the need to use it much and it would have had too narrow depth of field (though sods law dictates the one picture I post was with this lens :-).

Any others with feedback on concert photography would be interesting.
