Photographer's Note

This is an image of the Champs de Mars taken from the observation deck (lower level) of the Eiffel Tower.

The Champ de Mars, or 'Field of Mars', is a large public greenspace located between the Eiffel Tower and the École Militaire. The park is named after the Campus Martius of Rome, a tribute to the Roman god of war. It is an appropriate name given that the lawns here were formerly used as drilling and marching grounds by the French military.
