Photographer's Note

"Americans currently predict they will spend $714 on Christmas gifts this year -- well exceeding the $638 they forecast in November a year ago for the 2009 holiday season, but still trailing the pre-recessionary November forecasts recorded over most of the last decade." (www.gallup.com)

CHRISTMAS originally was an old European midwinter celebration, celebrating the end of the darkest days of winter and the return of light in the spirng ahead.

Then it was adopted by Christians to symbolically celebrate the arrival of Christ, their saviour.

These days it is an orgy of consumerism and kitsch. In the west and its commercial colonies, consumer frenzy reaches fever pitch and then surpasses it, consuming ourselves to death and endangering the very planet we live on.

Do we dare to give presents that money can't buy?
