In the background between the two middle trees you can see the Ossuary in Verdun were 130.000 unidentified soldiers is resting, they were killed in Verdun battlefields of WW1.

Below the Ossuary is also 16.000 crosses which French soldiers are buried.
The signs point the way to several memorials and sites in this area, everything from forts to trenches and memorials. The Fort Douaumont is the heaviest and best fortified fort in this area. Its also the best known fort.
