Photographer's Note

A pilgrimage is a journey to a sacred place. A person who makes such a journey is called a pilgrim. You can see them here walking toward one of the most well known sacred places of Europe, hoping for assurance of eternity. They also can seek fulfilment of life in form of a new T-shirt.

Perched atop a small, rocky island in a shallow tidal bay, the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel is a true marvel. An oratory was built on the site in the 8th century after an apparition of the Archangel St. Michael. The present Benedictine abbey dates back to the 13th century and was very important and influential in the Middle Ages. The abbey's church, cloister, gardens, the north-facing, Gothic buildings of "La Merveille" (The Marvel), the narrow town streets, and the ramparts combine to make Mont-Saint-Michel one of France's most impressive sites.
