Fontaine Schwendi

This little square is Place de l’Ancienne Douane in the historic centre of Colmar. In the middle of it stands a fountain with a statue of Lazarus von Schwendi (Fontaine Schwendi), who and was a 16th century Austrian general in the Imperial Army of the Holy Roman Empire. The sculptor of the stature was no other than Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who was born in Colmar and whose most famous work undoubtedly is the Statue of Liberty.
