Photographer's Note

Kalajärvi reservoir in a cold (-15 C) weather. The water level has been dropped two meters during the winter due to an enbankment leak. That is the reason for the extraordinary shape of the ice. In the left side of the picture there is a part of a small island.

Possibly due to the fact that there is a deep channel in middle of the lake where water always flows thus making the ice thinner, there has been several cases where fishermen's cars have sunk.

The shores or the lake are not very tempting for building summer cottages because the water level changes and the reservoir is not very deep to begin with. However, there is a popular camping area on the opposite side of the lake. During the winter there is also an official ice race track on the other side of the lake.

Kalajärvi reservoir has been built around an existing, yet much smaller lake due to rivers flooding in this area every spring. The reservoir was ready in 1977.
